I was looking for a simple and natural-looking garland and turned to some of the things I already had around the house and decided to make a wool pompom garland.
I've seen some felted pompom garlands around and considered making one of those, but I was looking for a pompom with a little more volume. I liked the idea of using natural elements and, as happens so often, I turned to wool. This ended up being a really quick project I did in a couple of hours on a Sunday evening, and it even turned out exactly how I had envisioned. These are the type of projects I need more of in my life.
What you'll need:
- wool roving in whatever colors you want to use in your garland.
- twine
- tapestry needle
Using your roving, pull off about 2 inches worth of the roving (adding more or less depending on how big you want your pompoms). Lay down the roving and start separating out the strands and working them between your fingers. it will start to puff up, and you just have to start working it into the sphere. I gently rolled it between my hands to create the sphere, then continued to work with the wool to separate the fibers. You'll want it to look light and airy like spun sugar.
After you've made your pompoms, you'll just need to thread a tapestry needle with the twine and gently push the needle through the pompoms. If you've worked it enough, the pompoms will generally hold their shape. The sides may squish together a bit when threaded, but it's easy to pull them out again once they have been treaded.
That's it! The pompoms stay in place really well but can be easily moved into different positions on the twine. Now you just need to hang it up!
